Please fill out and mail the registration card enclosed in your package so that Adobe Systems can keep you informed of the latest changes and improvements to the Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Separator, Adobe DrawOver and Adobe Type Manager® programs. You must return the registration card to receive technical support.
• The Adobe Illustrator application, the Gallery folder and the PPD folder have been compressed to fit on the appropriate disks. To decompress the files:
1. Double-click the Installer icon.
A dialog box appears asking you to select a location for the folder to be installed. Select a location and click Install.
2. Wait for the program to decompress.
• Be sure to install the Adobe Type Manager program version 2.0 and the Helvetica bitmap and outline fonts before running the Adobe Illustrator program version 3.0.
• To copy objects as you move them with the cursor keys, press Command-Option-Shift while you use the cursor keys. Refer to the Quick Reference Card for information on other keyboard shortcuts.
• Be sure to save files that are to be imported into other applications by selecting one of the following Preview options in the Save dialog box: None (Include EPSF Header), Black & White Macintosh®, Color Macintosh, or IBM® PC. Don not save with None (Omit EPSF Header) when importing to other applications.
• If your file takes an inordinately long time to print, try setting the Flatness value in the Paint Style dialog box to a minimum of 2.
• To preview the effect of the flatness setting on your output device, you must set the output resolution in the Preferences dialog box. Select the Split Path Resolution option to activate the Output Resolution option. The screen image will approximate the results from your output device.
• Text within patterns will print correctly, but may appear jagged on the screen.
• Do not select the "Unlimited downloadable fonts in a document" option in the Page Setup dialog box; selecting this option causes no fonts to be downloaded to the printer.
• Pressing the Tab key inserts a space in both point type and path type and forces the type that follows to advance to the next baseline. In area type, if the text object is wrapped around a graphic object, the type will appear on the other side of the graphic object, not necessarily on the next line below the current line. Pressing Return forces the type that follows to advance to the next baseline below the current line.
• You can use kerning to adjust the text margins by moving the edge of the type slightly to the left or right.
• If the blinking cursor doesn't follow the characters while you are typesetting with the Courier typeface, and you are using Font Porter™, check to see if Courier is present in two locations: in your system file and in a Font/DA Mover document in your system folder. If it is present in both places, remove Courier from your system file and restart your Macintosh.
• If special symbol characters don't typeset correctly, make sure you have installed the Symbol bitmap font using Font/DA Mover, Font Porter, or a desk accessory such as Suitcase™ II.
• Do not stroke text with a pattern; it will not print on the printers that are currently available.
• Do not save files that contain compound paths (including type that has been converted to outlines) that have been converted to guides.
• If you save an Adobe Illustrator file with a color preview and place the file into another application, the placed image will not appear in 24-bit color mode. However, the frame around the placed image will display correctly, and the placed image will print correctly. Set your Macintosh to 8-bit mode to view the image.
• The Adobe Illustrator EPSF Riders file contains Read Me notes that explain how to use the file.

GRAPH DESIGNS
• When editing a design within a graph, you should select the entire design. Any edits made to parts of a design will be lost if the graph is recreated with a new style, graph design, or data.
• The height of the backmost rectangle in the design is what is used to scale the design; even if the design is rotated, the original height is used to scale the design. Remember that the taller the backmost rectangle is relative to the rest of the design, the smaller the design will appear in the legend. The design is always scaled uniformly to avoid distortion, and it is scaled so that the height matches the height or width of the original legend box.
• You can adjust the width of repeating graph designs using the Column Width field in the Graph Style dialog box. This scales the design horizontally while the height remains constant.
• To create efficient graph designs, use the fewest number of objects possible. It often helps to ungroup rectangles and circles and to remove their center points before defining the design.
• Be aware that clicking OK in the Define Graph Design dialog box sometimes redefines the graph design. This happens when you have something selected, paste a graph design, and click OK. If you want to paste a graph design without redefining the graph design, make sure that nothing is currently selected.
GRAPH DATA WINDOW
• Large numbers that end with four or more zeros (such as 100,000 or 1,253,520,000) are sometimes shown in the data entry line in scientific notation. These figures will appear as "1e+05" or "1.25352e+09" (these translate to "1 times ten to the fifth power," and "1.25352 times ten to the ninth power"). Although the Adobe Illustrator program sometimes displays numbers in scientific notation, it does not understand numbers entered in this way. If you want to edit a scientifically notated number, you must retype it in the original format (i.e., backspace over the "1e+05" and retype "100000").
• When importing files, the Adobe Illustrator program does not erase the current table before importing data; therefore, if you are about to import a file that does not have as many columns or rows as the data that already exists in the table, and you don't want the extra data to appear, you must delete the old data manually.
GRAPH CUSTOMIZATION
• If a label or legend text is wrong, any corrections done by editing the text object in the graph itself will not be remembered the next time the graph is recreated with a new style, graph design, or data. Make all corrections to the text in the Graph Data window.
• Not all customizations of graphs are remembered when a graph is recreated. A simple way to see if a customization will be remembered when a graph is recreated is to select the graph, open the Graph Style dialog box, and click OK. This will recreate the graph even if nothing has been changed, and will show what is remembered and what is discarded.
• If you don't want certain numbers in the axis to appear, set the Paint style of those numbers to no fill and no stroke rather than deleting the numbers. Deleted numbers will reappear (and print) the next time the graph is recreated; however, numbers set to no stroke and no fill will appear on the screen but will not print.
• Type style changes made to text objects in a graph will be remembered when the graph is recreated only if you select the text object with the direct-selection tool, not with the type tool's I-beam pointer.
• Do not add objects to a graph object group; added objects will disappear when the graph is recreated. The most common way this happens is Option-dragging columns to create a shadow effect. Use the Shadow check box in the Graph Style dialog box rather than creating a shadow manually.
• A graph shadow can be customized as a group; however, customization of individual parts of that group will be lost when the graph is recreated.
Adobe Separator 3.0 Read Me Section:

• PostScript® Printer Description (PPD) Files, needed by the Adobe Separator program, are included in the Gallery Disk.
• The PPD folder contains a Read Me file and a Filename.MAP file. The Filename.MAP file specifies which PPD files should be used with various printers.
• Marks that are partially off the edge of the page may cause RangeCheck errors.
• Any registration marks inside the bounding box may be covered by the image. The image is printed on top of the marks.
• Displayed colors don't exactly match the colors displayed by the Adobe Illustrator program because the preview contains dithered colors that change when the image is scaled down.
• All five files from the Adobe Photoshop™ program's five file color separation format must be in the same folder.
• If a custom color is converted to a process color, all process colors are enabled even if the custom color does not contain all the process colors.
